Fentanyl is a highly potent, synthetic opioid1,5 Fentanyl is approximately 100 times more potent than morphine and 50 times more potent than heroin.2 Fentanyl is commonly prescribed for moderate to severe pain relief.3
Fentanyl is often distributed illegally for its heroin-like effect. Due to its potency, fentanyl is commonly added to other drugs such as heroin, cocaine, and methamphetamine.6
After continuous injection of fentanyl, the user may experience protracted opioid abstinence syndrome, such as ataxia and irritability, leading to addiction.7,8 Due to the potency of fentanyl, fentanyl poses an extremely high overdose risk especially when used with other drug substances.4 Serious adverse effects of fentanyl include respiratory depression, hallucinations, low blood pressure, and death. Continued use of fentanyl can lead to opioid use disorder.1 Compared to amphetamine misuse, fentanyl dependent drug takers show higher rates of HIV infection, more dangerous injection behavior and higher lifelong rates of overdose.9

* A negative result can be interpreted as soon as both the test (T) and control (C) lines appear. A positive result can be interpreted once the control line has appeared and the background has cleared to white, typically by 60 seconds. Do not read results after 10 minutes.
